Example – points for business experience

As an example of points that a person may claim for business experience under the General (Active) Migrant category, let’s consider a migrant:

  • who has 14 years of qualifying business experience
  • who has seven years of his experience is in a publishing business which he established himself
  • whose publishing business has had 12 full-time staff for the last two years
  • who has not exported to another country or imported from New Zealand.

This person can claim:

  • 50 points for 14 years business experience.
  • 5 bonus points for management skills, as he has had at least 10 full-time employees for at least 12 months and 5 additional points, as his business has been in a future growth area (publishing).
  • 5 bonus points for entrepreneurship, as he established his business himself and has operated it for at least 12 months and 5 additional points, as his business has been in a future growth area (publishing).
  • No bonus points for export linkages, as he has not exported to another country or imported from New Zealand.

In his Expression of Interest he may therefore claim points for business experience as follows:
